PatPly FAQ

  • What is the best way to cut Patterned Plywood?

    - Patterned plywood cuts really well with a bandsaw, and a table saw. I recommend a higher TPI (Tooth Per Inch) blade for flat cuts. If you plan to re-saw your panel, you should use a re-sawing blade with a fence.

  • Can I use a router or a CNC on Patterned Plywood?

    - Routers and CNC machines also work well on Patterned Plywood, however unsupported or smaller pieces can end up with tear out on the corners.

  • How can I get that awesome finish that you get on your videos?

Any standard wood finish will work on Patterned Plywood, so choosing a finish is definitely a personal preference.

    - Spray Lacquer - This is my personal favorite, it doesn’t yellow the surface much, and it brings out the iridescence with a finish that lasts for a really long time. (Make sure you wear an appropriate respirator when using this.)

    - Polyurethane - Brings out the iridescence, but can be a bit too yellow.

    - Water-based poly - Better at maintaining the surface looking the way it does without finish but does not bring out the iridescence

    - Odes oil - This is a very nice food safe option. I suggest using the Odies butter over the top of the wax if you want it to maintain its sheen

    - Mineral oil and wax - I find this is messy and the finish doesn’t hold up over time

    - Rubio Monocote - I have only used the “Pure” color and it left the surface very yellow. I do not recommend, but maybe some other colors would work better

    - Stains - I have not played with stains very much, but there’s no reason why this shouldn’t work. If you do stain your boards please let me know how it goes info@almfab.com
